The Roadhog Trike
Like every Tomcat product, the Roadhog is different - very different
Cycling Enemy No 1 - Weight
The Roadhog™ frame is tough and stable, so it feels right on the road, but most important of all it's light in weight, and nothing is more important to the special needs user. You wouldn’t expect a sportsman to win the Tour de France on a Grocer's Bike so why expect a person with muscle tone, co-ordination or endurance issues to do well on a heavy special needs trike.
It doesn’t matter if its steel or onions – weight is weight - and it does you no favours at all.
The Other Enemy is Friction - An Engineer's Word for Inefficiency
Until the Roadhog™ multi geared trikes have all worked in the same way – inefficiently!
To include a gear-hub in the drive, conventional trikes mount the hub midway between the chain-ring (pedals) and rear axle. That involves heavy support brackets with chain adjusters and tensioners everywhere. Worst of all the system needs two chains.
A chain drops the power efficiency by 8% so a bicycle is around 92% efficient; but a second chain drops efficiency by yet another 8%. That means that a tricycle rider with a mid span hub has to do much more work than a bicycle rider. Not good news if your balance or muscle tone is poor.
The Tomcat Roadhog ™ is different. The Roadhog’s hub is incorporated directly into the rear axle using a leading manufacturer hub that’s engineered to Tomcat's own design. This simple, yet efficient transmission has only one chain which does away with all the extra weight, poor efficiency, complex adjustments and high maintenance you get with a conventional arrangement, leaving the rider to get on with the job of cutting up other road users.
The Tomcat Roadhog can Even be Built With a Two Piece Frame, and That's Clever in Three Ways!
Firstly, you’ve got the flexibility to take the Roadhog with you – in the boot of the car or on the bike rack perhaps... you can even leave half of it at home by mistake!
Secondly, you can quickly swap the Roadhog from trike to trailer, great if you want to join the rest of the family on long cycle rides, or have dad do the work!
Thirdly, and cleverest of all; no other multi geared trike can totally separate for transport, because of the gear-change cable linking the handlebars and gear hub. A folding frame is the best you can usually hope for.
The boffins at Tomcat have overcome this problem with a cunning design called “Make and Break”: so when you put the Roadhog together the cable “Makes” and when you take it apart again it um - “Breaks” - fiendishly clever!
So there you are then! What looks like a simple trike for young people and adults, turns out to be the fastest, most family friendly, versatile and transportable trike your money can buy.
And while we’re on the subject of dosh – because it does away with all the Heath Robinson ironmongery – it’s probably the cheapest too!
All you need now - to slow down that accursed traffic and put near invisible pedestrians in fear of their lives - is leap on your Roadhog™, gesticulate wildly with your arms and shout the Road Hog motto - “Get out of my way”!
